Dante's Inferno, depicted in the painting, is based on Dante Alighieri's literary work, The Divine Comedy, where the author describes his descent into Hell and the terrible punishments suffered there by the damned. The work succeeds in visually capturing the tortures and torments that Dante describes in his book, using a highly symbolic and detailed style. Through his masterful use of chiaroscuro and composition, he managed to capture the desperation and suffering of the characters, transporting the viewer to that dark and terrifying place full of condemned and sinners.
